Metalic Side Lamp

A step-by-step tutorial in Photoshop on how to draw a metalic side lamp for use in interface designs.


Instructions:

1. Open a New Document in Photoshop. Choose a 600x600 width/height resolution for a good working canvas area.
2. Create a new layer. Name it "Lamp Shade".
3. Select the Pen Tool. Create a path like the one below:



4. Select the Path Selection Tool. Right click the path, choose "Make Selection" from the pop-up list.
5. The "Make Selection" box appears. Accept the default Feather Radius: 0 and click OK.
6. Select the Gradient tool. In the Gradient Editor, set the gradient to the following:



7. Using the Gradient tool, draw a path for the gradient from the bottom left to the top right of the selection area.



8. This will create a gradient across the selected area.



9. Create a new layer. Name it "Light Source".
10. Select the Elipse tool. Make sure that "Paths" is selected in the options bar.
11. Draw an oval path.



12. Click Ctrl+T to enter Free Transform Mode. Use the shape handles to rotate and adjust the size of the oval path until it fits nicely over the image on the "Lamp Shade" layer.



13. Select the Path Selection Tool. Right click the oval path, choose "Make Selection" from the pop-up list.
14. The "Make Selection" box appears. Accept the default Feather Radius: 0 and click OK.



15. Select the Paint Bucket tool. Fill the selection with white.



16. Choose black as your foreground color.
17. Make sure that the "Background" layer is the active layer.
18. Use the Paint Bucket tool to fill the background layer with black.



19. Right click the "Light Source" layer. Select "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
20. Set the properties for "Outer Glow" to the following:



21. Set the properties for "Stroke" to the following:



22. Click OK.



23. Create a new layer. Name it "Armiture".
24. Move the "Armiture" layer under the "Lamp Shade" layer.
25. Select the Pen tool. Draw a path for the lamp's armiture.



26. Select the Path Selection Tool. Right click the armiture path, choose "Make Selection" from the pop-up list.
27. The "Make Selection" box appears. Accept the default Feather Radius: 0 and click OK.
28. Use the Paint Bucket tool to fill the armiture selection with grey.
29. Click Ctrl+D to deselect.
30. Right click the "Armiture" layer. Select "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
31. Set the properties for "Drop Shadow" to the following:



32. Set the properties for "Bevel and Emboss" to the following:



33. Set the properties for "Gradient Overlay" to the following:



34. Click OK.



35. Create a new layer. Name it "Base".
36. Move the "Base" layer under the "Armiture" layer.
37. Select the Elipse tool. Draw an oval path for the base of the armiture.



26. Select the Path Selection Tool. Right click the oval base path, choose "Make Selection" from the pop-up list.
27. The "Make Selection" box appears. Accept the default Feather Radius: 0 and click OK.
28. Use the Paint Bucket tool to fill the oval base selection with grey.
29. Click Ctrl+D to deselect.
30. Right click the "Base" layer. Select "Blending Options" from the pop-up list.
31. Set the properties for "Bevel and Emboss" to the following:



33. Set the properties for "Gradient Overlay" to the following:



34. Click OK.
35. You should now have your metalic side lamp post.
